Since Ma Bell (AT&T) was broken up, so did the effectiveness of the Yellow Pages, in terms of finding new customers for small businesses. Yes, the breakup did what Bill Clinton had promised: it created competition. But when it came to advertising in the Yellow Pages, the new competition destroyed the effectiveness of the “yellow” pages, since one needed to advertise in the new competitors’ ‘yellow books’ as well as AT&T’s phone book. What once cost a few hundred bucks for a Yellow Pages add, soon became a few hundred bucks in all of the competing yellow books, that is, to achieve the same results.
The original Yellow Pages brought new customers, and those new customers recommended the good companies they found through the Yellow Pages. For around $350 a month, a quarter-page ad in the Yellow Pages often brought in $2,500 to $3,500 in revenue from new HVAC jobs I was hired to do.
Social media as a means of finding new customers cost much more than that, from my perspective.
The New Hampshire Connections Business Directories are my version of the new “Yellow Pages.” Here on New Hampshire Connections, our directories are local to New Hampshire residents. Soon, virtually all (+/- 120,000) of New Hampshire’s small businesses will be presented in our directories. Wherever you live or do business in New Hampshire, finding a business is no longer a lengthy process.
New Hampshire Connections is real connections between people and companies, and vice-versa.
